Pour le 25 anniversaire de passion and warfare Steve Vai va sortir des titres qu'il a composé entre les albums de Flexable et passion and warfare (1984 -1990), il a déjà mis en boite 7 à 8 morceaux. L'album s'appellera Modern Primitive et sortira courant 2016 (Juin). Passion and Warfare sera remasteurisé , un DVD avec des extraits d'enregistrements studio, des interviews et des films de la promotion de l'album.

When in Vancouver Devin Townsend picked me up and we were able to spend some hours together. This shot was taken at this extraordinary little bird sanctuary he took me to. It's always so good to connect with him. And wait until you hear the work that he did on my new record, "Modern Primitive", that comes out this summer. The song is called "The Lost Chord", and his work on it is truly brilliant. It's way out there and I'm very excited for you to hear it.

ça fait plaisir de renouer avec un bon album de Vai, story of light (2012) mettait resté en travers de la gorge ( piteuse production ) ... Vai parle de Modern primitive comme étant l'album entre Flexable et Passion and warfare , il a raison le bougre !! c'est frais ! j'ai déjà écouté plus de 10 fois album et je m'en lasse pas ! il improvise pas mal ! " the lost chord avec Devin Townsend est très réussi ... les bonus de Passion and Warfare m'ont déçu !

La super rétrospective sur Devin Townsend de V. (au passage, merci!) m'a inspiré ce topic.
Fan de Zappa et Vai je me suis fait plaisir à rassembler ici quelques vidéos.
L'histoire commence quand, le jeune Steve, dans sa 19e année en 1979, est recruté dans l'équipe du sieur Frank Zappa.

On lit souvent qu'il a été l'élève de Joe Satriani; en réalité il n'aurait fait qu'un seul cours avec lui (http://www.metalorgie.com/groupe/Steve-Vai). Certes, ils ont joué souvent ensemble.
Pourtant, l'œuvre du guitariste qui a le plus d'influence sur Steve Vai est sans l'ombre d'un doute Frank Zappa.
Il est imbibé de Zappa, le Stevie… Il a toujours expérimenté sur les traces de Zappa, à tel point qu'avec le recule, il m'apparaît comme LE fils spirituel de monseigneur Zappa et véritable continuateur de son œuvre.

Imaginez, il débute la guitare à 13 ans … 6 ans plus tard, il auditione chez Zappa et est embauché !
Première tournée mondiale en 1980, Vai a 20 ans; et il joue avec un monster sacré!

Après 3 ans, plus ou moins, chez son altesse Zappa, il monte plusieurs groupes The Out Band, The Classified et 777 (1984), trois groupes fugaces, avec la constante du bassiste Stu Hamm, élève comme lui au Berklee College of Music, avec qui il avait monté son tout premier groupe, Axis (1978-1979), qui devient Morning Thunder (1979).

Date importante, 1984, avec la sortie de Flex-able
dont, Little Green Men


et la même année la suite, Flex-able Leftover, qui contient des morceaux enregistrés pour Flex-able mais qui n'avaient trouvé de place. Ils ont donné un vinyl limited edition (2000 exemplaires).
[Pour la petite histoire, je l'avais acheté en 89 (à prix d'or), et par malheur et bêtise profonde, je l'ai prêté …  puis ne l'ai jamais revu… je m'en mords encore les doigts 30 ans plus tard!]

Durant les six années qui suivent, Steve repart fréquenter d'autres formations :

En 1986, c'est la sortie film Crossroads et son célèbre duel…  

(Malheureux Stevie, mis à mal par le jeunot de Karaté kid qui joue du Paganini!)

Il est ensuite embauché par David Lee Roth: résultat, deux albums, Eat 'Em and Smile (1986) et Skyscraper (1988).

Steve Vai - Fever Dream Live at Bucharest

(seul live trouvé où il a sa guitare 3 manches; je l'avais vu au Monster of rock avec D.Lee Roth avec cet instrument.)

Avant dernier groupe avec lequel il joue pour cette seconde période de sa carrière (la première étant Zappa cloturé avec Flex-able): en 1989, il rejoint Whitesnake et participe à l'album Slip of the Tongue (1989 / 1990).
Sur le site de SV on peut lire cette remarque laconique qui en dit long: "It was what it was."

En 89 il joue encore sur l’album Hey Stoopid d’Alice Cooper (avec Joe Satriani en guest sur le titre Feed My Frankenstein)
… Mais une page se tourne.

Après 6 ans dans ces illustres formations, Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth et Whitesnake, SV revient à ses préocupations tout en participant à divers collectifs (Zappa’s Universe; G3)
Mais sa carrière internationale est lancée:
1990 Passion and Warfare,
1993 Sex & Religion,
1995 Alien Love Secrets,
1996 Fire Garden,
1999 The Ultra Zone.

Mais revenons à nos moutons. En 2006, Steve Vai rejoint la tournée Zappa Plays Zappa aux côtés de Dweezil Zappa et Terry Bozzio.

J'ai lu sur son site (dans un message du 24/9/17 à propos d'un Zappa Hologram tour) "A day doesn’t pass that I don’t think about Frank. " (Pas  un jour ne passe sans que je ne pense à Frank)

Plus de 60 albums plus tard …

Je retrouve toujours la flamme Zappa dans la guitare de Vai … par exemple "Now We Run", album "Live In Minneapolis - Where The WIld Things Are", en 2009.


Avec Modern Primitive (2016-2017), le dernier opus de SV, il s'agit selon l'artiste, du chainon manquant entre Flex-able et Passion and Warfare. Il a repris des ébauches de morceaux travaillées dans la période post Flex-able.

SV: Well, I was a teenager in the 70s, so I was exposed to all that really great proressive rock stuff in the second (…?) like Led Zepplin and Queen and Deep purple. You know Deep purple, you know like a lot of those bands at the time they had their own sound and it was very raw, you know, really uthe ingredients were very in-you-face and the music, the songs were great songs, and you know great songs draw you in ; and they were great live band because they they had a persona, a real personality and every musician in the band was an excellent musician

SV: It's really hard when you're doing a tribute to a band, that's an iconic band, that has the stamp of somebody like a Deep purple, I'm usually very apprehensive, because unless you get the right group of musicians together, you know they sound like rehash jams of the previouse band and when I had heard the people who are participating on this record I knew that it was… it was coming from a real place of passion for these bands and when they said 'hey do you want to do Highway star?' I just could not resist.

Glen Hugues: With respecting the track itself, of course, but we… I think every artist is appearing on this tribute, or album, is basically putting their own stamp and feeling onto it. I think it would be silly just copying it; you know…

SV: whenever I do, do these things I try, I try to keep the right balance of respect for the original version and just try to contribute something that, that has my voice in it, as a guitar player and my, you know, my musical sensibilities withou going too far to Venus, so I just wanted to do little somthing different so I thought hum, I know, I'll use the seven string guitar and I'll tone it down and before, before I did the track I said to them, 'okay you're asking me to do this, you know that you may get something that's a little eccentric and they said that's why we asked you, so I said ok, you know and they just let me go for it and I think it turned out nice.
But (when?) I heard the final track the first thing I was listening for because … because I'm a the guitar player and I worked? pretty hard on the tracks was, you know, 'how was my guitar sitting?', 'how did it come out?', because when I mix like a rough or something the guitars are so loud, you can hardly breathe, you know, but as soon as when used both vocal came in, I was actually just stopped dead in my tracks, I was just… I was thinking (where is this guy been)? all my life.
You know, he really delivered, I mean, he's always delivered, and maybe I'm wrong, but I just think he went the extra mile on this one, because he's … he's a prince and he just exploded the track; I didn't, I didn't … I wasn't even? listening for my guitars, that's how much I like the way he sung.

beau travail Frack je ne savais pas que Vai avait enregistré highway star ! je le trouve un peu coincé sur le solo !

Il y a plus de 15 ans Steve Vai avait fait jouer certains de ses morceaux au piano par Mike Kineally ..jamais pu trouver ce CD ( à l'origine il devait faire partie d'une Jewel box) bref , voici le second volume effectué par Miho Arai ..la complilation est sortie en janvier !

60 Ans !

Hey Folks, Vai here. I wanted to challenge myself for my 60th birthday and decided to record a simple trio track. I gave myself some parameters to work within. I told myself I would use a Strat style guitar, (tougher for me to play then a Jem) use a very clean tone, (not conventional for me) no whammy bar, (that’s like losing a body part for me) and no pick, just fingers (way out of my comfort zone).

I also had this idea for a particular type of riff that can only really be played on a guitar with no whammy bar. It’s a technique that I call “joint shifting." This is where you bend a note while fretting another, but I wanted to do this technique with a combination of double and triple stop single note bends while fretting other notes and releasing bends. After considerable experimenting, I discovered it created a unique sounding passage. You can hear this technique on a few sections of the song. I certainly hope other ambitious guitar player see the potential in this technique and take it to the moon!

During this period, the world is slowly starting to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. Many people are still facing challenges and are eager to find entertainment on the internet. I have seen the best come out in many people during this challenging time. When people join together with a common positive intention, the power surge they create within the collective is the healing element that is most needed. Like many little candles coming together to burn as bright as a star.

I needed a title for the song, and with the above in mind, and the fact that it’s my 60th, I choose the title “Candle Power."
